eControl System Requirements - eDirectory and GroupWise

eControl 3 integrates into a large number of systems using a wide variety of different programming interface (API) to communicate with each system. Since many of the API's required for eControl to manage and communicate with these systems, the Windows platform is required for the eControl server itself.

Planning the eControl Environment

eControl integrates into a large number of systems using a wide variety of different programming interfaces (APIs) to communicate with each system. Windows is the required operating system for eControl because many of the APIs required to manage and provision user accounts in Novell-only, Microsoft-only and mixed and multiple GroupWise, eDirectory, Active Directory and Exchange environments are only available on the Windows platform.

Mixed Environment

If this eControl server will service a mixed Active Directory & Exchange and eDirectory & GroupWise environment, ensure that the eControl host server meets the eControl System Requirements - Active Directory and Exchange in addition to the requirements detailed on this page.

Certified Systems

eControl 3 can connect to:
  • Certified Directory: any eDirectory tree, 8.5 or higher
  • Certified Email System: any GroupWise system, 5.5 EP or higher

eControl Service Accounts

eControl service accounts will need to be created. Pay close attention to this requirement throughout the system requirements below. It is highly recommended that the same common name (SAM account logon name) and password be used for all eControl service accounts created. Ensure that the service account name is not the same as the computer name of the Windows system hosting eControl, e.g. if the eControl host server is named eControl then use a different name for the eControl service account like ecadmin.

eControl Host Server - System Requirements

eControl will be installed and connections will be configured and licensed on a eControl Host Server that must meet these requirements:
  • Windows XP (x86) or Windows Server (x86) 2003/2008 for eDirectory and GroupWise
    • 500 MB available disk space (in addition to server requirements)
    • 256 MB RAM (in addition to server requirements)
  • eControl 3.x cannot be installed on Windows 2000.
  • Apply the latest Service Packs and applicable Microsoft Updates.
  • Install Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1
  • IIS - Requires Website support and Management Console. (Unless otherwise required, do not install SMTP, FTP or NNTP sevices.) Ensure that ASP is enabled in IIS Manager.

  • An LDAP enabled server for access to eDirectory.
  • For simple/universal password support, SSL must be enabled on LDAP server (enabled by default).
  • eControl Host Server does not need eDirectory locally installed
  • eDirectory "econtrol" service account is created and enabled. Set the password to never expire or change.

eControl Host Server Additional Requirements

  • Can be a stand-alone or member server.
  • Disable Data Execution Prevention (recommended because GroupWise and/or Novell clients to be installed):
    • for Windows 2003:

  • Novell GroupWise Client (if GroupWise will be a managed email system).
  • ConsoleOne 1.3.6f (with LDAP snap-ins; and GroupWise snap-ins if GroupWise will be managed).

Firewall Requirements for eDirectory and GroupWise

Ensure that any firewalls between the eControl host server and the all GroupWise Domains and Post Offices open required ports (confirm ports required for non-Secure and Secure (SSL) connections) against each MTA and POA.

Requirements for Novell GroupWise Support

  • All versions of GroupWise are supported.
  • GroupWise Client (should match server version).
Three different configurations are supported:
  1. GroupWise Domain on a network accessible NSS volume (hosted on either Netware or Linux) requires a Novell Client version 4.9+ installed and GroupWise client to be installed on the eControl host server. No "Remote Management Agent" is required.
  2. For GroupWise system installed on a Windows server:
    • Option 1 - install an empty secondary domain on the eControl host server (recommended), or
    • Option 2 - install the "Remote Management Agent" on the Windows server hosting a GroupWise domain.
  3. For GroupWise hosted on a Linux server (installed on non-NSS volume):
    • Option 1 - install an empty secondary domain on the eControl host server (recommended), or
    • Option 2 - install an empty secondary domain on a NSS volume on a Netware or Linux server, or
    • Option 3 - install an empty secondary domain on a Windows server and install a "Remote Management Agent".

Requirements for Novell Storage Manager Support

  • All versions supported.

Requirements for Novell "Home Directory Management" Support

  • Not required if Storage Manager is used.
  • Home Directories must be on network available NSS volumes (NetWare of OES2 Linux) or OES2 Linux NCP mount
  • Requires a Novell Client version 4.9+ be installed on the eControl host server.
